Martin Allen watched his side beat Stevenage 2-0 at the Lamex Stadium on Saturday and then sang the praises of the two goalscorers Lee Hughes and Ben Burgess.
Veteran striker Lee Hughes put County on their way when he grabbed the opener in first half stoppage time and Burgess added the second early in the second half.
And it could have been so different for Notts had Stuart Nelson not saved a 6th minute penalty from Craig Reid.
‘There is lots of character in the squad and we showed that in abundance. I know very well Stevenage are a really tough prospect at home and so we had to do our homework on them,’ said Allen.
‘We did that and in the end it worked out well for us. We’ve got the experienced strikers up there and once again they’ve come up trumps between them.
‘Lee has once again proved how dangerous he can be – especially at this level – I thought he took his goal extremely well as there was pressure there. As for Ben, he’s been around for quite some years too but opposing teams can’t afford to give him chances like that. If you offer him as much space as that he can produce the goods.
‘All in all it’s another very important three points on our long road. We’re nicely tucked in there and we can simply keep making progress.’
