Notts County have announced the signing of Belgian international midfielder Gill Swerts.

The 32 year old defensive midfielder can also operate at right back and brings good experience to the side, with 17 international caps and one goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina allied to his long club playing career.

He was released last summer by Dutch side NAC Breda and he’s well known to manager Ricardo Moniz from his time in Dutch football.

In spells with a number of well known foreign sides, he moves to us with almost 300 games under his belt, with a return of 16 goals and he’s also had Champions League experience whilst with AZ Alkmaar and Europa League experience during spells for the same side and Feyenoord.

Speaking to the Official Site after penning his two year deal, he explained.

‘I got in contact with the trainer Ricardo Moniz and we know each other from when we were younger at Feyenoord. We started talking and he is very ambitious. We all want to go back up, for the fans, to get them back into the stadium. I want to be part of the team.’

Swerts admits that he probably wouldn’t be with us had he not known Moniz, but says himself that’s often how it works in football and he appreciates even knowing the gaffer he won’t be an automatic choice and he will have to prove himself in training and can’t take anything for granted, but he’s obviously hoping he’ll be a success with us.

‘I hope to be important for the team. Notts have a great stadium and ambition to go back up, we should be doing better than League Two and League One. We should be aiming for Championship. To drop down, it`s a decision I`ve made, but I want to be part of it. Even at this level, the competion is hard, there will be a lot of games, but I`m looking forward to it.’
