Home Games Now Key – Derry

Manager Shaun Derry has said that Notts County must win their remaining home games if we are to keep our League One survival hopes alive.

With three home games left, and nine points on offer, that would certainly make a nice dent in the league table and of course the first comes up this weekend when we face Port Vale, before then facing Crawley Town and Swindon Town.

With safety this season said to be secured by reaching the 50 point mark, victories in all three of those games would put us on 49 points.

Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, the gaffer said.

‘I think if you were to talk about the 50 point mark you’re hoping that you’d be staying up. It would take an unbelievable run from the other teams to get any more than that. I think it’s 50 and that’s what we’ll be looking to achieve. Four games ago, you’re looking at 50 points and thinking ‘where are they going to come from?’ Thankfully we achieved nine on the bounce so psychologically it’s huge.’

Of course to do that and get three home victories on the bounce now – well if we manage it would actually be five on the bounce – is a huge ask for us given our consistency really but it’s certainly got to be the target and winning three out of the final five is a doable target as well and anything then from the away games because a bonus.

Jamal Campbell-Ryce has also conceded that Notts County simply must complete our ‘Great Escape’ because he knows so many people have their futures on the line.

We are three points off safety with the five games remaining and like the gaffer, he feels 50 points will be enough to keep us in League One for next season and that of course has to be the aim of everybody.

‘For me personally, I’m out of contract so when I cross that white line I’m not only representing the club but myself as well. Notts County might not offer me a contract for next season so I’ve got to prove myself to other people. There’s so many people’s jobs – ours as well – and if you get relegated, not many people want to touch you.’

JCR is quick to also qualify this given it begins to come over a bit ‘me, me’ and player focused, by also pointing out that relegation would lead to a further drop in financial revenue for the club and not only would that then affect the management and coaching staff, it would affect every member of staff at the club because cut backs would have to be made and that would hit everybody who takes a wage from County, so they are playing for their futures as well – it’s not just the players.

‘It’s a domino effect so we’re the ones responsible. It’s the whole club and it all rests on us.’
