Mixed Emotions For Derry

Manager Shaun Derry has admitted it was very much a case of mixed emotions following our eight goal thriller against Crawley Town.

Speaking to the Official Site after the five three victory at Meadow Lane Derry admitted he couldn’t have been more delighted with our attacking intent on the day, but he had to be disappointed with some of our defending over the 90 minutes.

‘I thought the attacking play throughout was fantastic, we looked dangerous every time we got the ball. Obviously the positives is that we are another game unbeaten and these lads don’t want to give it up. The goals we conceded did annoy me, I would rather have won 3-0 than 5-3. Two out of the three, we should have defended better and that disappointed me.’

Admitting that because of that the victory was ‘tinged’ with disappointment but with County moving up to sixth place in the league the gaffer had to admit he’s delighted to see us consistently ‘punching above our weight’ and it’s a testament to the efforts of the players to have put us up there given the season we had last term, but again referencing the goals conceded it shows that we still have a lot of work to do and he wants the players to take that disappointment and let it drive them on to improve further and take that into the midweek fixture so we don’t make the same mistakes again.

With Garry Thompson grabbing three goals and the match ball, he also spoke briefly at full time but insisted the three points were far more important than what was his first career hattrick.

‘It was one of those games where everything I touched, it went in. It’s my first hattrick, so I’m absolutely delighted but the most important thing is the three points, the unbeaten run and pushing on up the table. We started the game really well and we want to stay among the top six now.’
