Assistant manager Gregg Abbott has said that Notts County won last night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash against Mansfield Town on the training pitch as they reacted superbly well to the loss last weekend against Bristol City.

With manager Shaun Derry wanting a reaction following the two one loss, he certainly got it.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, Abbott said.

‘I thought we won the game yesterday at the training ground. They were so keen to win, spirits were high and they didn’t want Mansfield taking anything home. It’s sent everyone home happy. The performance was key, we passed it as well as we’ve done all season. It was always going to be difficult, especially after the pre season game but we competed well and got our ball players on the ball, the likes of Reece Brown and he made things happen for us.’

With the two goalscorers being Ronan Murray and on loan Jake Cassidy, Abbott added that since he and Shaun came to the club, Murray’s finishing has never been in question so to see him get on the scoresheet again was no surprise, especially as it came from such a good and well worked opportunity.

Of course Abbott doesn’t do many immediate post match interviews, but with him the figure head in the dug out owing to the gaffer’s two match ban, he said he enjoyed the opportunity again but he couldn’t get Derry off the phone!

‘I got plenty of calls from upstairs, but I wasn’t interested! I think he wanted to place a Chinese order after the game, and we are having egg friend rice and sweet and sour meat balls!’

Joking aside, Abbott added that Derry couldn’t wait to be back on the touchline now because he was anxious about not being there, but it’s a good lesson for him as he admitted himself as well.
