Derry – We Now Need Something Special

Following on from the loss to Tranmere Rovers manager Shaun Derry has said that Notts County now need something special over the next nine games if we are to secure our League One status for next season.

It was the quintessential six pointer against another team battling relegation and inconsistent form, and we came away from it with nothing to show for our two goals and efforts on the day and that has been the story of our season in too many games even when we have deserved something from them.

Having taken the lead through a Ronan Murray goal, it could’ve all been so different as well, but we went in behind at the break and despite Alan Sheehan getting us back on level terms we still let them get the winner six minutes from time when the least we deserved was a point although it’s debateable how useful a point would’ve been to us at this stage of the season.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, Derry explained.

‘I’ve got to say that it’s going to be some turnaround to actually enable us to get to where we want at the end of the season. I’m absolutely devastated by that because I thought they were absolutely magnificent from start to finish.’

The gaffer goes on to say that given he hasn’t been slow to criticise them in previous games it really is a case of giving credit where it’s due for that performance, and it makes it even more frustrating and heartbreaking for him because he feels we deserved all three points from our efforts.

‘Again, you can look back on individual errors for goals but I’ve got to say, bar the five ten minutes where I thought we shot ourselves in the foot and their one strike, which was an absolute worldie from Jennings, there was only one team in it. That was us and that’s absolutely heartbreaking for us.’

The performance and our efforts for Derry were everything he wanted from the team and he doesn’t feel they let anyone down this weekend at all.

If we can replicate that effort and cut out the errors we may pull off that ‘something special’ but with each passing game it looks more and more unlikely.
